One family.
Even though most of us were born and raised in Sarawak, we have spent our adult lives exploring the world. Since returning to Borneo, we frequently host friends we've met during our travels. Many of our friends are seasoned travelers and avid motorcycle riders.
When our friends visited us, they noticed that existing Borneo tours often lacked the authenticity they sought. Those who rented motorcycles found the bikes to be of poor quality. The van tours took them to the same crowded locations, and the motorcycles available for rent were generally small and poorly maintained. To address this, we initially purchased two extra bikes specifically for our friends. As word of mouth spread, the idea for the Borneo Discovery Route emerged. Welcome to the Borneo BDR.
Our team is led by our Iban patriarch, grandson of a headhunter and a native of a longhouse in Sibu. He received his early education under the British system and has dedicated over four decades to serving in the Royal Malaysian Police force, holding various postings across Sarawak and Sabah before concluding his career as an instructor at the police academy. After retirement, he became a government-certified tour guide, specializing in authentic Sarawak tours along the Borneo Discovery Route. His deep knowledge of Sarawak’s history, culture, and folklore continues to inspire and educate those around him on our Borneo tours.
Our matriarch, of Chinese-Malaysian descent, has committed more than 40 years to the nursing profession. She remains actively engaged in clinical practice at the hospital and academic instruction at the university level, ensuring the well-being of our team and guests alike.
Their eldest daughter, born on the floor of a traditional longhouse, earned a scholarship to study in the United States, where she met her American husband. After a successful career with Fortune 500 companies in both the U.S. and the Netherlands, the couple embarked on numerous global adventures, traveling to over 50 countries by land, sea, and air. For the past 11 years, they have made Borneo their home.
Her husband of 25 years is also American. Growing up restoring cars with his uncle and riding ATVs and motorcycles with his brothers, he later worked in construction and the automotive industries before returning to college for a degree in English to pursue a teaching career. For the past 15 years, he has worked as a teacher and chef. He rides with us on our motorcycle tours, and as he holds commercial driver’s licenses in both Malaysia and the USA, he also drives on the van tours. He enjoys sharing a good dad joke, so bring earplugs!
The eldest son is a professional engineer and serves as a Major in the Royal Malaysian Army. He is married to a woman of Bidayuh heritage and has been stationed in Melaka, Kuala Lumpur, Sibu, Kuching, and Kota Kinabalu. During their free time, they contribute actively to our tours. He specializes in jungle survival, offering invaluable insights into local flora, fauna, and safety. His wife provides unique access to Bidayuh communities and longhouses, enriching your cultural experiences along our Borneo Discovery Route.
We speak English, Malay, Iban, Bidayuh, and Chinese fluently, and are also working on our Dutch, German, and Spanish! For more information, feel free to contact Borneo.
